The following is a brief selection of my recent "hands on" work that I have been producing at home and in the studio. Most of this is relief printed and continues to explore different mediums and techniques, whilst also applying the skills that I have learnt from my more commercial work. I find it is a good outlet for my creativity and gets me away from the computer to allow me to work directly with the materials involved.

Rhinoceros

Rhinoceros

Rhino detail

media: 1 colour relief print on plywood
series:10
size: 6” x 10”

This print explores the use of plywood for printing rather than the more traditional lino or boxwoods. The limitations of the plywood mean the subject has to be approached differently, as it tends to breakdown and come apart if you push it against the grain and beyond its limits. The rugged texture of the rhinoceros suits this rough and battered process perfectly.

Rhinoceros

The Princess & the Frog

media: 2 colour relief print on lino
series: 5
size: 6” x 10”

It is the nature of any creative person that they view things slightly differently from the norm and this simple cartoon is a literal interpretation of this. I wanted to take the fable of the princess and the frog with all of its childhood familiarity and view it from the frog’s point of view. It is not a new idea, but its simplicity lends itself to this particular print process.

Rhinoceros

Cockerel

media: watercolour
size: 24” x 36”

After the limitations of relief printing, this cockerel, with his magnificent plumage, gave me the opportunity to explore bold, explosions of colour whilst avoiding the muddy and washed out results that are so often the hallmark of watercolour painting.

Pig

Pig

media: black relief print on lino
series: 10
size: 10” x 20”

This pig print was designed as a Christmas card for my father and brother-in-law who have been raising pigs over the summer ready for the Christmas festivities. I printed it at home on a small book-binding press that is perfect for Christmas cards and postcards.

Beetle

Beetle

media: 2 colour relief print on lino
series: 10
size: 15” x 8”

This beetle is part of an ongoing series of insect prints that I am working on which combine together as a single larger piece. It is designed to evoke the 19th century fashion for collecting exotic insects from around the world.

Corn Cob

Corn Cob

media: 2 colour relief print on lino
series: 10
size: 45” x 20”

I started this print in the depths of winter as a bit of escapism to remind me of sunshine. The corn cob is the perfect symbol of summer with it's rich yellow kernels organised and wrapped up waiting to be enjoyed at harvest time.
